William ‘Bill' Helmey Sr., 82

Dunnellon

William L. "Bill" Helmey Sr., 82, Dunnellon, died Friday, April 11, 2008, in Ocala.

He was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Flagler Beach. He moved to Inglis in 1986 from Savannah, Ga., and to Dunnellon in 2006.

He was a union carpenter in Savannah, Ga., working in construction for many years.

He was Baptist.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, having served on the USS Wake Island in the Pacific.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Savannah, Ga., the Carpenters Union and he was an avid fisherman.

Mr. Helmey was preceded in death by his daughter, Janice Marlene Helmey, in 1963 and his son, William L. Helmey Jr., in 1978.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Barbara J. Helmey of Dunnellon; son, John M. Helmey of Forest, Va.; brother, Vernon Helmey of Savannah, Ga.; four sisters, Arlene Barner, Margaret Sykes and Doris Helmey, all of Savannah, Ga., and Betty Holcomb of Palm Springs, Ca.; and one granddaughter, Cynthia Nowak of Hollywood, Ca.

A viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Roberts Funeral Home, 19939 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Dunnellon, at which time the funeral service will be held with the Rev. Christopher Greaves of Rainbow Springs Village Church officiating. Burial will follow at Dunnellon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
