Obituary
Geneva Louise Straight, 92, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2024. The Straight family moved to Dunnellon in 1960 where she opened a kindergarten in her home. She eventually closed her private school and began teaching at the First Baptist Church’s newly opened pre-school until she retired in 1993. Generations of children enjoyed Mrs. Straight’s creative, imaginative, and unique approach to teaching.
She is predeceased by her one and only love, Walter David Straight Jr., her parents John and Pansy McCarty, sisters Zella, Jean, Pearl, LaVaughn, and Johnivie, and three brothers Junior, Russell, and Wayne. Over the years she said goodbye to many friends from her Church and the neighborhood on Granada Street where she lived for 55 years. Her family knows she is with all of those loved ones now.
She is survived by her youngest sister Linda McCoy, and her three children, James (Jean) Straight, Judy (Jim) Taylor, and Beth (Karl) Williams. “Granny Straight” leaves 7 grandchildren – Alicia (Kevin), Carrie, Justin (Jennifer), Sarah, Alex (Karen), Melinda, Shawn (Melissa), 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, and many other relatives – all whom she loved dearly.
Geneva spent the last several years of her life living with Judy on North Hutchinson Island, Florida. She loved to sit outside in their porch garden with her coloring books and Wordfind puzzles. She had a happy last day sitting on the porch, solving puzzles and enjoying the warmth of the island sun.
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, June 29, 11:00 a.m. at Roberts Funeral Home in Dunnellon. Additional details to follow.
